UCLA waited eight months to play basketball again. Charisma Osborne scored 31 points and UCLA took control in a dominant first quarter, going on to beat Cal State Fullerton 98-49 on Friday in the teams' delayed season opener. UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond approved paying $80 per person to test the Titans on Wednesday and again Friday, in addition to the Bruins, so the game could go on.

Haley Jones felt all the nerves as if it were her first game as a freshman again last fall. Jones scored on a layin 14 seconds into the game and wound up with 16 points and 10 rebounds playing for the first time in more than 10 months since a knee injury ended her freshman season early, leading No. 2 Stanford past Cal Poly 108-40 in the teams' season opener Wednesday. When she went out last year it was devastating for our team,'' Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said.

Olivia Cochran scored 17 points and Dana Evans added 15 to help No. 5 Louisville beat Southeast Missouri State 74-53 on Wednesday in the opener for both teams. The Cardinals were originally supposed to play Middle Tennessee on Wednesday, but that game was canceled because of coronavirus issues. Louisville coach Jeff Walz took to social media and a group text chat he had set up with about 25 coaches to try and find a replacement game.

Kentucky interim women's basketball coach Kyra Elzy suspended All-America guard Rhyne Howard for two games and guard Tatyana Wyatt for three on Wednesday, just hours before the No. 11 Wildcats were to begin their season against Murray State. Howard, a junior, was suspended for not upholding program standards while Wyatt, a senior, was disciplined for a violation of team rules.

Zia Cooke was so excited to get to play again that she could barely sleep. Victaria Saxton had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Cooke scored 18 points as the Gamecocks overwhelmed Charleston 119-38 on Wednesday for their 27th straight win. Cooke was worried her team might not get to play at all as the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact college sports as it did last spring, when SEC champion South Carolina missed out on a chance at a national title.

Chasity Patterson scored 30 points and No. 11 Kentucky, without its all-time winningest coach and first-ever preseason All-American, opened its season with an 86-60 win over Murray State on Wednesday. Howard, the only unanimous preseason All-American, averaged 23.4 points and 6.5 rebounds last year. Undaunted by losing all five starters from a team that won the Big Ten women's basketball championship, Maryland coach Brenda Frese restocked the roster with enough talent to potentially keep the Terrapins atop a conference they've ruled since arriving in 2014. UConn has not had seven first-year players on its roster since back in 1988, the year the Huskies won the first of their 18 Big East titles. No. 3 Connecticut returns this season to the league it helped build with a young, but talented team after playing seven years in the American Athletic Conference without a conference loss. The Huskies did lose star Megan Walker in the offseason.

Now Jeff Walz' Cardinals will tussle with eighth-ranked North Carolina State for league supremacy. After missing last season for breast cancer treatment, Syracuse point guard Tiana Mangakahia has been granted an NCAA eligibility extension and is back with the Orange for her final year. Mangakahia was diagnosed in June 2019 and went through eight rounds of chemotherapy and two operations. Mangakahia put her WNBA ambitions on hold in April 2019 and chose to return to Syracuse for her final year of eligibility.

The NCAA is seeking to dismiss a federal lawsuit by two college athletes that seeks to prevent the association from limiting compensation athletes can make from their names, images and likenesses. Attorneys for the NCAA filed a motion to dismiss an antitrust lawsuit by Oregon women's basketball player Sedona Prince and Arizona State swimmer Grant House that also seeks damages for potential past earnings athletes have been denied by current NCAA rules, The Oregonian reported Sunday. Prince and House are also suing the Power Five conferences - the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference - for unspecified damages.

Florida State women's basketball coach Sue Semrau has always preached to her team that family comes first. After trying to go back and forth between Seattle and Tallahassee, Florida, during the last couple of months to be with her 81-year-old mom, who has ovarian cancer, Semrau decided to take a leave of absence for the coming season to spend time with her family. ''I was starting to consider it in April and May. I was waiting for the COVID to get better and it could be different,'' Semrau said during a call Thursday.

Former University of North Carolina basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a traffic accident in January that killed an elderly woman, officials said. The Durham County District Attorney's Office said Hatchell pleaded guilty on Tuesday to misdemeanor death by vehicle. Hatchell also was ordered to complete 50 hours of community service, pay a $150 fine and $150 in court costs, the district attorney's office said.
